It showed in his conversations with you, with people, and running for office.Dan Siegel ran for office several times, but his 2014 Oakland Mayoral Run was his greatest political achievement. No, Dan did not win, my godsister Libby Schaaf did, but he was an apparent front runner for a while, and most importantly, was able to communicate his idea for a fair and just Oakland.Dan’s other finest moment was just after Mayor Quan cleared Oakland City Hall of Occupy Oakland dwellers in it. It was next to impossible to get then-Oakland Mayor Jean Quan and her staff to decide who was going to make a statement. The scene when my camera was off was unfortunate, although Mayor Quan’s daughter stepped in to calm the storm and got Dan to appear. As the video would show, he was candid. Dan, who was on Jean’s staff as chief legal adviser, did not like Jean’s decision, and quit her office November 15th, 2011.Dan is also best known for his work as a civil rights lawyer on the issue of the People’s Park encampment in Berkeley.Former Oakland Councilmember Desley Brooks added these words about Dan Siegel: It’s hard to put into words the depth of the loss we’ve experienced with the passing of Dan Siegel. Oakland has lost a giant. The world has lost a relentless voice for justice. Dan was many things. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, a brilliant legal mind, an unwavering progressive, and a fierce champion for the people. He lived his values openly and never backed down from a fight worth having. Whether he was taking on the University of California, the California prison system, or the City of Oakland, Dan stood firm with clarity, purpose, and unmatched skill. He had a mind like no other. Sharp, strategic, and deeply principled. But it wasn’t just his intellect that made him extraordinary. It was his heart. His belief in the dignity of every person. His courage in standing up to power. His constant push to make this city, and this country, live up to their ideals. Dan was a friend, a mentor, and a truth-teller. He showed us what it means to be bold and compassionate. To fight with integrity. To lead with conviction. His absence will be deeply felt, but so will his impact. Dan changed lives.
